The Walter Lantz Cartune Encyclopedia: Cartunes on DVD:
Columbia House

In 2003, Columbia House began to offer a new mail order, 10-volume set of Walter Lantz cartoons entitled Woody Woodpecker and Friends. The series was not obtainable in stores and could only be exclusively ordered through Columbia House (either over the phone or online). Volumes were available in both DVD and VHS.

Although the new series included spectacular copies of the color Lantz cartoons (sourced from original theatrical prints – not fully restored as one might believe), there were some downsides. The black and white Lantz cartoons which make up a good portion of Universal's animation library were completely neglected. Furthermore, the cartoons on this collection were taken from a 1976 syndication, meaning that many of them had television titles and some were even edited (click here for a guide on what was cut). Another problem was the use of Digital Video Noise Reduction (or DVNR) on some of the shorts in the series. The use of this process on Walter Lantz cartoons isn't new (also see the Comedy Legends: Abbott and Costello and the Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters series).

A total of twenty volumes were initally planned, but the series ended with only fifteen in fall 2004. Click here to view the contents of the unreleased volumes.

It should also be noted that all of the containers are completely identical, with the exception of the linear notes.
